ABOUT

Olivia Margarita Gastaldo is a visual storyteller, amateur botanist, wanna-be chef, and lover of fantastical things. Olivia works as a Director and Cinematographer in commercial and narrative media. Olivia grew up between the west and east coasts of the US, in San Diego and New York City. They was born into a multicultural family, a blend of indigenous Mexican and European heritage. Olivia’s father, a photojournalist, and her mother, a graphic designer, raised them to value creative thinking and resourcefulness. They actively shared their love for the arts, often taking Olivia to work with them where they could observe and learn from their friends and colleagues. Olivia fostered a deep respect and connection to the natural world from an early age through gardening, camping, snorkeling, and hiking. During this time, Princess Mononoke became Olivia’s favorite movie and the spark that started her obsession with cinema. Olivia’s storytelling style organically gravitates toward themes of Magical Realism, inspired by Native Mesoamerican folklore and Sci-Fi animes. Olivia’s approach to film is fantastical yet intimate. Olivia mixes mediums like photography, painting, and music to immerse audiences into unique, color-saturated, magical worlds. When not on set, Olivia can be found adventuring around California, cooking without recipes, and striking up sincere conversations with folks they meet along the way.

Olivia identifies as a member of the LGBTQ+ community and actively hires talented crews of predominantly women and LGBTQ+ folks from various cultural backgrounds. Olivia has worked with brands such as Tiffany & Co, Capitol Records, Chipotle, Netflix, and Lexus. Their films have premiered at Outfest and festivals around the globe. Olivia is available for commercial and narrative work and is currently in development on a feature and short film.
